Sustainable Village Resources, Kenya

Location: Rongo District, South Nyanza, Kenya
Project Start Date: Open
Expected Completion Date: Three years

Project Concept:

We would like to initiate collaboration and partnership to promote and enhance the implementation of a sustainable livelihoods project (SLP) for poverty reduction and environmental conservation in Kamagambo location, western Kenya. The project targets poor women and youth to engage them in low cost, environmentally benign technological activities that promote income generation through Agriculture for Food Security (agro-forestry for crop production, and livestock husbandry), Health (HIV/Aids and Malaria prevention), Natural Resource Management (Biodiversity and Water Conservation), Energy and Fish ponds.

The Sustainable Livelihoods Project (SLP) started with one women group but is now being expanded to include other women and youth groups within Kamagambo location. These new groups have been identified in
collaboration with the local administration (Chief's Office), and the Constituency Development Committee (CDC).

We would like to request for a formal partnership and collaboration with the Sustainable Village resource. In particular, we would like to suggest the following as initial areas for initiating the collaboration, with a possibility of expansion in future subject to successful implementation of our joint projects:

  1. Funding Support: Assistance with fundraising to provide seed crops funding for establishment and promotion of sustainable agriculture amongst rural women in Kamagambo
  2. Technical and technological support for management and expansion of multi purpose tree plants as part of the agro-forestry component of the sustainable livelihoods project
  3. Exchange and collaboration through co-ordination for internship with women groups and youth groups to work on SLP activities

Please feel free to suggest any other potential areas of partnership and collaboration.

Detailed Project Description:

Soil erosion management, heath, food security in the region, seed bank, appropriate technology, animal husbandry, training women on draft oxen uses, such as transportation and ploughing using chisel plough. Animal nutrition for milk production and working bulls and steers. To sum it up - complete Sustainable agriculture.

Project Duration & Schedule:

The project should take three to 10 years. It will depend on how fast the villagers learn the new skills, and how fast they embrace it.

Project Needs:

We desperately need ways to conserve our soil - we are losing a lot of soil from soil erosion. The second phase will be tree planting and grasses to help the villages with fuel wood. We also need safe stoves - many women in my village are dying from indoor pollution, and water born decease such as cholera and typhoid.
